I have had my alien retro key holder for eons. I consider myself a hoarder of sorts because I do have in my custody stuff I should have discarded long ago for something newer. But old stuff equals comfort I believe, but my love for them doesn’t prevent them from finally falling apart. So my old retro keychain gave up its ghost, and I decided that for its replacement I would learn how to make DIY key chains for a more personalized touch. My criteria were a functional, lightweight keychain on fleek! But it had to be easy to make too since I have the attention span of a goldfish.

 The dream catcher keyring

Materials needed

  • Key ring
  • A 2″ diameter metal ring
  • 80″ of Waxed thread
  • 80″ of Leather lace
  • Beads
  • 3 feathers
  • Scissors
  • A good glue

Method

  1. To wrap the ring fold your leather lace in half. Ensure that its ends are even.
  2. Make a loop at its top, and ensure that 2″ of it is left to loop onto the key ring
  3. Using your glue, glue the loop on the ring.
  4. When your glue is dry, wrap the ring as tightly as possible from the top center to its bottom on each side. If you do not make the wrapping tight, you could end up with unsightly spaces between the leather.
  5. Once done with the wrapping, tie the ends together then glue their ends.
  6. Tie a knot using your thread at the top near the loop.
  7. Beginning making loops in a clockwise direction, wrapping your string around your ring in between the leather gaps.
  8. Make as enough looped rows as desired, then tie the knot on the thread on your last loop and cut the remainder off.
  9. Tie some thread around the ring, and thread in your beads.
  10. Take the feathers by their quill, and wedge them in the bead holes, then attach them in place with some super glue. Trim off the excess, and voila, a beautiful dream catcher key ring is yours!
