I am one of those people that like to wing it during my forays into the great outdoors. I bring along only the absolutes, and I just noticed that one of those every day carry item is my trusty key chain. This is the one object that is with me wherever I go. Besides my bunch of keys, I really have not added any other useful item to it. That got me thinking on ways to add value to my everyday travel partner. After a brief search, I found out 5 things that should be in your keychain.

  1. A light source
Someday Murphy’s law birds will come home to roost in a lift or on some countryside road; all things will go dark, and you will wish you had a source of light. There are tiny flashlights that fit perfectly on a keychain, taking up very little pocket space, and super handy. One cannot overemphasize the use of lightweight and efficient sources of light when in the outdoors.
  2. A GPS position locator device
Being out in the wild is fun, but not so if you are not good with maps and directions. Pinpointing that much talked about fishing hole or that serene campsite can be elusive, but not so if you have a handy keychain size GPS locator with you. You can use this device to pinpoint the location you’d like to get to or return to, then wander off into the unknown with full confidence that you can get yourself back home.
  3. A fire source
While real survivalists can start a fire with spark rods, tinder, and some kindling, I like the ease of use of an actual flame. You can add a mini lighter to your keychain for instances when you might need to cook, get some warmth or lighting.
  4. A key-shaped USB drive
I would love a scratch resistant and waterproof flash drive on my keychain. Many are the times I have gone off and wished I could quickly access some confirmation documents or scans lodged in my gadgets at home. A portable minute USB drive would eliminate such situations. And you can have one with security encryptions for added safety too.
  5. A really cool pen
You will never appreciate the value of a pen till you really need it. A pen has no substitute so having a neat one on your keychain cant be a bad idea. Whether crossing custom lines or need it for that railway pass, you will have no need to look forlornly at fellow travelers for pen assistance.
  6. Some keychain hand sanitizer.
Nothing beats the sumptuousness of the street finger foods during travel. But if your hands have been in not too clean places, you might want to clean up first. Well, no easier way to it than using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer whose small bottle can fit on your keychain.
